What I love about
caving with Surrey Scouts is that its so relaxed, everyone is there not only
because they love the sport but also that they want to show other people
what an amazing time you can have. It’s fantastic, I went with a group of my
explorer scouts, 5th Farnham K2, who I knew and got on with
really well, but before I went I was so nervous and didn’t know what to
expect. Looking back on it I guess that’s half the fun.
After we were kitted out in our very flattering fluffy
suits and waterproof outers I knew that I’d let myself in for something I
would either love or hate. Once down the caves I had the most fantastic
time, scrabbling about, climbing up walls getting myself very stuck but
somehow managing to squeeze my way through, all with the knowledge that the
people around me were having an amazing time too. I learnt to trust the
people more, to laugh at myself but most of all that the more scared you are
and the bigger the challenge, the bigger the sense of fulfilment and rush of
adrenaline is at the end. I hope that Surrey Scout Cavers continue to spread
this amazing experience but please make sure you leave a free weekend for
us!
Thank you soooo much Bob (Tweedle-Dum!), Pete (Tweedle-Dee!)
and Matt (Mini-Dee!) for putting up with us, our ridiculous nicknames and
giving us weekends away to remember! Even our leaders had a fantastic time
although they still struggle to find the Nordrach Hut with or without a map;
why does it take so much less time to get home when we have Bob to follow?
One day maybe Dave (our leader) will manage to open the front door on his
own!
