Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts are young people usually between 14 and 18 years old. Explorers is the new fourth Section of the Scout family designed to stimulate and develop young adults. The pictures below should give you an idea of what Explorer Scouting in Farnham is all about. Click here if you would like to go to the Scout Association website for more info. International Camp 2004 - Barcelona
After Switzerland in 2003 it was going be tough to come up with a more adventurous and challenging venue for 2004, but we did. After a lot of hard fundraising (including giving up sweet things for 26-days, one of the leaders running the Paris Marathon, bag packing, car boot sales and donations from local charities) twice as many Explorers as in 2003 headed off to Spain for a week of adventure, culture, hard work and not a little bit of fun...

MadCats and K2 do gokarting
Thanks to a generous donation from the Farnham Lions, four Explorers, two from K2 and two from the Everest MadCats, spent an afternoon zooming round a gokarting circuit near Brighton in late October 2004.
London to Brighton
Four members of K2 having just finished the London - Brighton ride in 2004. Still to finish were the further members of the unit, and way way back the District Explorer Scout Commissioner!
Explorers' Isle of Wight activity weekend

For the second year in a row the Explorers headed off to an action-packed weekend in late October. Twenty-four Explorers from across the district, leaders and soon-to-be Explorers from across the District spent the Oct 31-Nov 2 weekend on the Isle of Wight at the 3d adventure centre. Blessed with sunshine on the Saturday, we enjoyed a day of archery, climbing, Dragon Boating and Quad Biking. And ended the day in traditional scouting manner – doing Karaoke. After a night in chalets, Sunday was wet and windy, but that did nothing to dampen our spirits. The weekend concluded with the assessment of the Archery certificate and Aeroball.

International Camp 2003 - Kandersteg, Switzerland
Everest MadCat's first summer camp was one to remember. Travelling to the International Scout Centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland, the Unit enjoyed a week including walking, white-water rafting, sledging, campfires and participating in a 1,500 strong scout procession to mark Swiss National Day.

Our warmest thanks go to all those who made it possible; fundraising and donations of over £2,000 made the whole trip possible.

K2 do survival skills
K2's survival skills evening including learning the finer points of rabbit snares, how to make them, and where to put them, apparently "over the rabbit hole" doesn't actually work. Then we found out all about the insides of fish, and the best ways of getting the sloppy bits out. Most people got to have a go, and what followed was like a Hammer Horror version of The Generation Game: Messy, very messy...
K2 go caving

For a weekend away you don’t tend to think of being stuck underground in between dirty, cramped rocks, heaving yourself up through holes, which are far smaller than you think you are. All this with men you’ve never met and a group of people that you know has done this sort of thing before. Scary! But, that’s what I got the first time I went caving, and guess what? I loved it, AND I went back for more! Click here to read the rest of the report...

Everest Mad Cats raise money for Great Ormond Street

For the second year running the Everest MadCat Explorer Scouts take part in the annual Scavenger Hunt run by the 17th Holborn Scout & Guide Group in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). The aim of the day was to answer as many of the clues and obtain as many of the items list as possible, without spending any money and using just a zone 1 Travelcard. This was no small challenge! The day was a huge success with 17 Explorers taking part and having a great time. Oh, and the teams came 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th, which was also really pleasing.
